Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin resumed abortion care today at their Walter Street and Madison East locations, and the ACLU of Wisconsin praised the win as a first step toward regaining full bodily autonomy and reproductive rights in Wisconsin.
The return of reproductive rights came after a Dane County Circuit Court judge ruled that the 1849 law does not apply to “consensual abortions.”
Dr. Melinda Brennan, executive director of the ACLU of Wisconsin, said the following:
“This is a monumental moment in the movement to win back our reproductive freedom. Since the overturning of Roe, Wisconsinites have taken to the streets to make it clear that they will not have their reproductive rights stripped away from them. They headed to the ballot box and showed overwhelming support for the right to abortion.
Abortion is healthcare, and we all need access to this crucial form of healthcare. We deserve to make decisions about our bodies and lives without undue political interference, and we will keep fighting until that’s the reality for all Wisconsinites.”
