Imprisonment is a brutal and costly response to violations or possible violations that traumatizes incarcerated people and hurts families and communities. It should be the last option, not the first. Yet the U.S. incarcerates more people, in both absolute numbers and per capita, than any other nation in the world.

Wisconsin has 23,377 people in prison. Although the overall U.S. state imprisonment rate decreased by 7 percent between 2000 and 2016, Wisconsin’s imprisonment rate actually increased slightly (1 percent) over the same time period. In 2016, Wisconsin imprisoned 383 out of every 100,000 of its citizens.

This workshop will focus on why reform in so important in Wisconsin.
