Failed to pass both houses, will not become law this session

This legislation establishes rights and protections for student journalists exercising their freedom of speech and press in school-sponsored media.

Specifically, the bill prohibits officials at University of Wisconsin schools, Wisconsin Technical College System schools, and K-12 public and charter schools from exercising prior restraint over school-sponsored media, which includes  any work published or broadcast by student journalists under the direction of a media advisor that is made available to students enrolled in the school.

These protections for student journalists were previously denied by the U.S. Supreme Court in Hazelwood School District v. Kuhlmeier, 484 U.S. 260 (1988), where the court gave schools the authority to censor student newspapers.
