During the 2021-23 Legislative Session, ACLU-WI opposed a bill that would have required the Department of Corrections (DOC) to automatically recommend the revocation of extended supervision, parole, or probation if a person is charged with a crime.

This resolution calls for a statewide advisory referendum on automatic revocation — a change that would exacerbate racial disparities in Wisconsin’s prison system, balloon the prison population, and create significant costs to local county jail and state correctional facilities.

In an advisory referendum, the legislature places a proposal on the ballot to gauge voters’ opinions. The results of an advisory referendum are not binding, meaning the results will not change the law.
