Eau Claire: Public Schools and Privatization: What's at Stake?

October 8, 2014 @ 7:30 pm
October 9, 2014 @ 8:45 pm

What have we learned about school voucher programs, charter schools, and efforts to privatize education? What effect do these programs have on the rights students enjoy, including the rights of students facing discipline and those who require special education in order to thrive?

Are all students benefiting equally from these measures? Or are they a threat to Chief Justice Warren’s declaration in Brown vs. Board of Education that “Education in public schools is a right which must be made available to all on equal terms”? Dr. Julie Mead, an expert on legal issues in public education, will discuss the constitutionality of publicly funded choice programs including vouchers and charters, with a particular emphasis on what’s happening in the state of Wisconsin.
